We Tested 19 Random Video Chat Sites for Trackers, Cookies & Speed — Here's the Data
Everyone in this category says they're "private" and "anonymous." Almost nobody shows their work. So we did the boring thing: we loaded 19 live random video chat sites in a clean browser, three times each, and counted exactly what happens to your privacy in the first few seconds — before you type a word. The numbers below are the median of those runs, and the raw data is downloadable. Our own site, a free random video chat, is in the table with everyone else — including the one metric where it doesn't look great.
The headline numbers
Across 19 sites, the median landing page fired 4 known trackers and set 6 cookies before any interaction — and more than half (11 of 19) had no hard age gate at all. The spread is enormous: two sites loaded zero known trackers, while the worst set 28 cookies the instant the page opened. What the tracker column really tells you
A tracker on a random video chat landing page has one job: tie your visit to an advertising profile. The sites at the top of our list — Emerald Chat (8), Mirami and Monkey (6 each) — are running full ad/analytics stacks, and Monkey contacted 28 separate third-party domains just to render its homepage. At the other end, Chatroulette and ChitChat hit zero known trackers. That doesn't make them "safe" outright — tracking is only one axis, and our guide on whether random video chat is safe covers moderation and stream-handling — but it does mean your raw visit isn't being resold to an ad network the moment you arrive.
Cookies: what gets planted before you say hello
Cookies set on landing — before you click anything — are the clearest signal of how aggressively a site monetizes attention. The median was 6. Mirami and Monkey both planted 28 cookies on arrival; ChitChat planted zero. If you care about this, the fix is one habit: open any random cam site in an incognito window, which throws those cookies away when you close the tab. It's the same hygiene we recommend before you talk to strangers on any platform.
Speed — and our own weak spot
Load times ranged from Ome.tv and Uhmegle (~2.4–2.6s) to Mirami (23s — its 28 cookies and 152 requests have a cost). Here's the honest part: our own site, a free video call with strangers, came in at 9.2s median — on the slower half. We measure low on trackers (2) and cookies (5), but we're not fast, and pretending otherwise would defeat the point of publishing our own numbers. It's a real thing on our fix list.
The age-gate gap nobody talks about
This was the most uncomfortable finding: 11 of 19 sites had no hard age gate — you land straight on a live cam surface with nothing between you and a stranger's camera. For a category that is overwhelmingly adult in practice, that's a real gap, and it's the first thing to check on any site (a decorative "I'm 18" footer checkbox doesn't count). How to use this (and how not to)
Treat the table as a filter, not a verdict. High tracker + cookie counts mean "assume your visit is being monetized hard — go incognito or skip." A missing age gate means "this operator invests nothing in keeping minors out — draw your own conclusion about the rest." But no table can measure the thing that matters most in the moment: whether the person on the other side is real and the room is moderated.
